M. A. Silva USA was established in 2000 by cork industry experts Neil Foster and Manuel Alves Silva, founder of M. A. Silva Portugal, a family-owned and operated company with a 44-year history of wine cork manufacturing. These two leaders identified winemakers' need for a clean, reliable source for corks.
Together they acted on their vision to deliver a dependable, verticallyintegrated and consistent supply of wine corks to the North American wine industry, meeting and exceeding their customers' expectations. M. A. Silva continues to grow and has established itself as a leading industry supplier through proven delivery of top quality cork.
In 2010, Neil Foster recognized the market opportunity for a quality wine bottle supplier; their customers needed on-time delivery of high quality glass bottles from a trusted supplier. They decided to expand their product line, creating a business that manages manufacturing and quality control at the source. Both cork and glass product lines have a proven track record of impeccable quality, reliable delivery, and excellent customer service. The company is often recognized as the North American wine industry leader in both products. M. A. Silva USA today, provides the perfect winery solution for bottle and cork:
Natural wine corks are preferred for all types of wine, aging periods and bottle formats. No other natural product offers this combination of visual appeal, neutrality and consistent sealing qualities. Our innovative custom-designed cleaning processes produce corks that exceed the highest industry standards and effectively volatilize potential TCA and other off-aroma molecules from the cell structure of natural cork.
We offer a full range of grades ranging from near visually perfect for ultra-premium wines through value priced corks intended for high-volume labels. Each is grade is available in different washes and multiple standard lengths. Custom sizes are also available.
A challenge for some winemakers is achieving a specific price point while maintaining the attractiveness of a natural cork closure. Colmated corks allow wineries to take advantage of the consumer preference for natural cork, while reaching lower price points competitive with synthetic stoppers and screw caps. "Colmate" means to fill or cover. For colmated corks, we use fine granular cork to fill voids and improve the appearance of a lower grade natural cork body. Colmated natural corks are offered in a 1 3/4” standard length (24 x 45 mm), plus custom sizes and washes.
Silktop® technical corks consist of a body composed of sterilized agglomerated cork granules, with a high-quality natural cork disk at each end. We use only FDA-approved food-grade bonding agents. This combination presents natural cork to both the wine and to the consumer while retaining properties similar to our natural cork offerings. It delivers a dependable seal, consistent insertion and extraction performance, below sensory level TCA and other off-aromas combined with outstanding visual appearance.
Silktop® stoppers are recommended for wines which will be consumed within three to four years.
Pearl® Micro-agglomerated corks are produced from sterilized natural uniformly sized micro-granules excluding particles that do not meet the narrow size tolerance. We use only FDA-approved food-grade bonding agents. This product has the feel of real cork and meets the same quality standards as our natural and technical wine corks, but at a price point competitive with screw caps and synthetic stoppers. Pearl® corks are offered 24 x 38 mm and 24 x 45 mm and are available in two granule sizes.
Pearl® corks are recommended for wines which will be consumed within 18 months to three years.
Pearl® Prestige micro-agglomerated corks are produced from steam and pressure treated natural uniformly sized micro-granules excluding particles that do not meet the narrow size tolerance. The steam cleaning process applied to the Pearl® Prestige corks is further advanced to ensure TCA levels below 0.5 ng/L. We use only FDA-approved food-grade bonding agents. This product has the feel of real cork and meets the same quality standards as our natural and technical wine corks, but at a price point competitive with screw caps and synthetic closures Pearl® Prestige corks are offered 24 x 38 mm and 24 x 44 mm.
Pearl® Prestige corks are recommended for wines consumed within 18 months to three years.
Our sparkling wine cork is used by some of the finest Champagne and sparkling wine producers in the world. Sparkling wine offers challenges for closure products. The closure must withstand higher pressures while maintaining consistent and specified insertion and extraction forces. Its visual appearance is critical, given the aesthetic emphasis placed on sparkling wine packaging.
Our sparkling wine cork is composed of a sterilized micro-agglomerated, and two discs of solid natural cork on the end that comes into contact with the sparkling wine. We use only FDA-approved food-grade bonding agents.
We offer three grades defined by the visual quality of its double natural cork disc at the end. Standard size offered: 30.5 x 48 mm. Custom diameter are available to winemakers with specific requirements. This stopper is designed to seal sparkling wines, beer and carbonated beverages.
M.A. Silva offers the finest Bar Tops using our high quality natural cork material with wooden, plastic or custom tops as a reusable closure for fortified wine, spirits, olive oils and vinegars. This stopper provides an outstanding appearance, consistent sealing performance, and reusable convenience.
The standard size is 27 mm diameter cap, 8 mm thick with a 19.5 mm diameter natural cork stopper. Different grades and custom sizes are available.
Each year, Manuel Silva and his team pride themselves on their personal involvement each year in sourcing the finest raw material in the forests; this most critical attention has proven to deliver the highest quality standard wine corks. Long-term collaboration with the best growers is the first step in operations that are 100% vertically integrated. This ensures complete control and certified quality through all aspects of production, from the moment the trees are harvested to the delivery of finished, customized corks to our North American customers. Cork planks, having been pre-selected for quality, are carefully sliced into strips depending on the length required. The corks are then hand punched from the strips maximizing good cork material use, and then followed by a rectification process designed to ensureperfect uniformity along sides and tops. All material left from this process is ground up and used to produce agglomerate silk top, pearl and champagne corks.
Over the last 40 years M. A. Silva has established itself as an industry technology leader. The Dynavox® system utilizes a closed chamber to boil cork planks under high pressure at 105° C. The increased temperature maximizes the removal of TCA, other anisoles and phenols responsible for off aromas, reduces tannins, and improves the appearance and elasticity of cork. Following the boiling process, cork planks are removed with an approx. 17% moisture content. The system eliminates the opportunity for mold growth and off flavor development caused by extended storage at high humidity.
The SARA® process is removes TCA and other polyphenols in granulated cork. This automated process ensures the granules receive prolonged direct contact with pressured steam volatilizing the target compounds. Material processed with the SARA® cleaning system are as clean as our natural cork, allowing M. A. Silva exceptional neutrality across our entire line of products.
M. A. Silva leveraged the latest technology in its development of the proprietary Maszone® system, a cleansing stage for finished corks.
The Maszone® system uses ozone and hydrogen peroxide as primary treating agents to further reduces organic impurities and compounds which could be precursors to off-flavors.
As neutrality is key to the corks interaction with wine, this washing process has proven to deliver neutral flavor characteristics and uniformity of color to each and every cork.
Corks are washed in three different washing options: *MSN140: gives the cork a natural color appearance *MSN40: leaves the cork with a light brown color *MSB240: leaves the corks with a white appearance.
As a member of the Cork Quality Council, we adhere to strict standards – but we don’t stop there. We strive to deliver products of unmatched quality and to provide customer service, shipment accuracy and follow-through that are consistently outstanding. To ensure we meet this higher standard, we created our Certified Quality Program. This comprehensive set of business practices defines our method and provides a basis for independent evaluation and measurement.
Every shipment from our facility in Portugal must pass the industry’s strictest quality assurance requirements before we will accept it into our inventory. Our flexibility allows us to do more thorough testing to meet specific customers’ requirements when requested.
Samples are tested for TCA, aroma characteristics and grade prior to delivery. Third party verification of our processes and quality drives predictable and repeatable performance. Our organization meets or exceeds the quality levels set by the leading European cork standards bodies, APCOR, C.E. Liege, and Systecode.
We guarantee that our corks perform to the highest industry standards with the levels of TCA being verified by GC/MS.
We have developed an individual cork testing method to deliver 100% TCA inspected* corks. This fully automated process is based on cutting edge gas phase spectroscopy and available for high end natural cork to seal ultra-premium wines. It inspects every cork individually, leaving no margin of human subjectivity.
*releasable TCA content below the 0.5 ng/L detection limit; analysis performed in accordance to ISO 20752.
